The Phoenix Suns are one of the biggest surprises from this season in the NBA, along with the Utah Jazz. They both lead the Wild West (Utah 1st and Phoenix 2nd). With a record of 32 wins and just 14 defeats, the franchise from Arizona that they will continue to be a tough team to beat for the remainder of the year and we will see how far they can get in the Playoffs.
Chris Paul and Devin Booker: a lethal duo
Chris Paul moved to Phoenix in the last player market in a trade where Ricky Rubio was left out of the team. The impact from that operation was instant. CP3 infuse more respect to the opponents than Rubio, he has more experience and more quality. The point guard averages 16 points; 4,7 rebounds and 8,5 assists per game; great numbers that reflect his role in the squad: organize the plays and create spaces and open shots for his teammates.
On the other hand, Devin Booker´s scoring average has decreased as a consequence of his new role in the team. The shooting guard now has to live with a pure base like CP3. This season he is averaging 25 points; 4,1 rebounds y 4,6 assists per game; however, Booker´s game goes beyond stats, as he is not just a shooter, but also a playmaker. This way, Booker makes up for his abilities, he is becoming a more complete player as time goes by.
Monty Williams, the Phoenix Suns architect:
If we take a look back, Phoenix Suns were a poor team with no future and seriousness. The arrival from some young players like Booker or Deandre Ayton improved a little bit the situation, but the Suns were not still a competitive team. The dynamic changed in 2019 with Monty Williams´sign as the new head coach. He has found the right way to make the team succeed with a playing system that fits in perfectly. He focused on improving defensively and relying his plays on the team´s star, Devin Booker.
However, now this system has been affected by Chris Paul´s addition. The point guard needs to be more guarded, which creates more space for Booker and so more chances for his teammates. Now the Phoenix Suns are a new team, a way better one. This new system added to a very competitive roster make the Suns a team to take into account for the remainder of the season and the Playoffs.
How far do you think they will get this season?
