When we think of young players who could dominate the NBA in a few years, one of the few names that comes to mind is Anthony Edwards. The Minnesota Timberwolves are having an incredible season and much of the blame lies with the high level of play of their young star.
The 22-year-old point guard was selected first overall in the 2020 draft. Since his arrival, Anthony Edwards had high expectations because of his level shown in college.
Since his arrival in the league, he has been getting better and better until reaching his best season so far: 25.9 points, 5.4 rebounds and 5.1 assists.
What is most surprising about Anthony Edwards isn’t only the season he is having, but also the great potential he is showing. The shooting guard is a player with impressive athleticism and a good shot.
Such is the hype that some former NBA players, including Kevin Garnett and Kendrick Perkins, have even compared Anthony Edwards, in terms of playing style, to Michael Jordan. Even Jordan himself told him that he had better physical attributes than him.
The truth is that Anthony Edwards has a very competitive mentality, which can be seen every time he steps on the court. Early Sunday morning we saw him in the first round of the playoffs against the Phoenix Suns, as Edward was unforgiving: 33 points, nine rebounds, six assists and an image to remember.
After beating a historic basketball legend like Kevin Durant on the court, we could see ‘Ant Man’ trash talking him. A sequence that will undoubtedly give a lot to talk about.
We already saw Curry’s Warriors eliminated in the Play-In, and who knows if LeBron and Durant could also be eliminated in the first round. Perhaps the era of these legends is coming to an end and it is time to give way to the new talents that are coming on strong.
In the summer, Anthony Edwards will take part in the Paris 2024 Olympics, where the USA is aiming to win gold after the failure of the last edition. The roster will be made up of 12 of the league’s best current players, including Edwards.
We’ll see how the playoffs go for the Timberwolves, who managed to finish the season third in the West. What is clear is that Anthony Edwards is playing very well this season and only time will tell if he can live up to expectations and reach his full potential, as he could be a player for the ages.
