The class for the 2021 Draft is one to pay attention to. The hype for some of these players was too high and so is now for the race for the Rookie of the Year Award. Some of them like Evan Mobley have met the expectations by coinciding with the outstanding season from the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The young center for the Cavs averages 15.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.7 blocks in 61 games in his first season and is considered as the main candidate to earn the Rookie of the Year Award both for his impact defensively and offensively. However, and despite his great start, Mobley is now going through a negative streak and other rookies are also showing off their talent.
Cunningham leads in Detroit:
The first pick in the Draft did not start off the best way. An ankle injury delayed his debut in the league and the adaptation was slower than expected from some of the fans. However, just as Cade Cunningham found the right dynamic proved that he is a generational talent who is ready to lead a team that can battle for the ring in the future.
All the Pistons’ performing goes through their new star, as he is giving hope to Detroit in order to bet on a winning project thanks to his excellent understanding of the game. His stats support this fact: 16.9 points, 5.9 rebounds and 5.3 assists. An aspect that harms him towards the race for the ROY is his team’s poor record (19-51).
A young defensive talent:
Drafted as the first pick for the Toronto Raptors, Scottie Barnes is another candidate to be awarded as the Rookie of the Year. His impact on defense has been as good as expected and he is showing that he can also average good numbers offensively as well.
Since the All-Star he is averaging 19.2 points with a 57% of accuracy on field goals, 8.5 rebounds, 1.8 steals and a block. His team is battling for a spot in the Playoffs and he is a key player in order to achieve that goal.
The talent shown by the Rookies this year leaves the NBA in good place, as its future is bright. Meanwhile, we as fans must be aware of the evolution of all these diamonds that are still being polished.
