This year’s draft class was expected to be as one of the most talented ones. One of the players that has not needed to much time to shine is Evan Mobley, a diamond with a lot of improvement margin but who is already pointing out to be a superstar in the league.
The good start of the Cleveland Cavaliers into the new season has spread to the rookie, who despite having already added plenty of game time (33.8 minutes in 15 games) is surrounded by players like Ricky Rubio, Jarret Allen or Darius Garland who can all help him to really improve during his first years in the league.
A diamond still to be shaped:
Drafted as the third pick, he arrived to Cleveland as a very interesting center but maybe with too many unknowns regarding to what would really be his level when taking on true professionals.
Cade Cunningham and Jalen Green, first and second picks were presented as less risky choices, able to help their franchises right away and with more solid numbers on scoring and assisting.
The reality is that Mobley has very interesting qualities both on defense and offense. His quickness despite his size makes him able to defend any position. On defense, he is the player that blocks the most shots and averages a steal and 1.6 blocks per game.
His thinness is something that can be corrected throughout his career and which will eventually allow him to dominate the paint, but for now he gets by with a great variety of movements in the post and a talented wrist that makes him dangerous also from the mid-distance. In his first 15 games he averages 14.6 points, 8 rebounds and 2.5 assists with a 49.4% accuracy on field goals and 30.8% on triples.
The versatility on both sides of the court make Evan Mobley to be one of the most interesting rookies this season, with a big margin to improve and the luck of playing for a team like Cleveland where he is well surrounded. We will know where his ceiling is as time passes by, but we have to enjoy his first steps for now.
