Footballer careers always go through different stages, better and worse ones. There is a player in La Liga whose high performing was unnoticed during a few seasons. Now he is getting well-deserved credit for it, but it has taken time. This is Gerard Moreno ´s story. The 29 years old striker is at his best moment on scoring and that level is dragging the attention in a market where European clubs are struggling financially. However, and despite many´s lack of knowledge, he has always counted on that scoring ability. Maybe his numbers were not as amazing as these one´s due to different reasons like maturity or another role in the team, but overall his production was similar.
Even Villarreal made the mistake to overrate him. It took place when he came back from his successful loan at RCD Mallorca. Despite his notable numbers during his first year in the football elite where he scored 16 goals (seven in La Liga, five in the Spanish cup and four in the Europa League) plus four assists (three in La Liga and one in the Europa League); Villarreal strengthened their forward area by signing Bakambu, Soldado, Adrián López and Léo Baptistão. Villarreal´s extraordinary moment invited to a big investment. However, this turned into Gerard Moreno having to be loaned to RCD Espanyol for just 1,5 M euros.
His growth was astonishing to the point that he played the full 90 minutes in all the 38 games of the 17/18 campaign after three seasons in Cornellá. Villarreal had a great chance to resign him and they did not waste it. Lucky they he did not call the attention from the English clubs´financial muscle three years back. Gerard Moreno is currently the most attractive player in Spain. According to Besoccer Pro, he has scored in the 60% of games he has played, that is to say 15 out of 25 games.
Gerard is on his way to earn the second consecutive ‘Zarra’ and with 20 goals so far is second in the race for the ‘pichichi’ award just behind Messi. His growth magnitude does not end there: he has scored 18 goals in the first quarter of 2021. Moreover, he will more than likely be the Spanish National Team starting striker ahead of the upcoming Eurocup next summer. Spain had not have a such a high scoring forward since David Villa retired. Furthermore, he is a very intelligent player and able to play anywhere in the attacking area.
No doubt that Villarreal´s franchise player is capable of achieving big goals now and in the next few years. External circumstances have delayed the opportunity for him to come but, ladies and gentleman, it is Gerard Moreno´s time.
