Matchday 37 of LaLiga EaSports has left the fight for the Champions League resolved after Villarreal CF’s victory over FC Barcelona. As for seventh place, the three-way fight between CA Osasuna, RC Celta and Rayo Vallecano continues after the win for the ‘Franjirrojos’ at Balaídos. At the bottom of the table, RCD Espanyol, who lost to CA Osasuna and are not yet out of the drop zone, as CD Leganés won in Gran Canaria. LaLiga Overtime for matchday 37 kicks off!

Rayo Vallecano storm Balaídos:
With a game to go, Íñigo Pérez’s side turned the fight for seventh place upside down with a vital win that leaves everything to play for on the final day. The Madrid side started behind after Marcos Alonso’s Panenka-like strike from the penalty spot, but they never gave up and gradually grew into the game.
With Jorge de Frutos at the helm, Rayo took control of the game and imposed their high tempo in some stretches punishing Celta, who tried through long possessions to dominate the ball. The Galicians had several clear chances, but found it difficult to generate advantageous situations for their strikers, something that the Madrilenians did take advantage of, showing more effectiveness.
Villarreal CF confirm their presence in the Champions League:
FC Barcelona returned to their stadium with the hangover of being league champions and hosted Villarreal CF. Marcelino’s side needed to win to secure their fifth place in the Champions League and they did so in a very open game with plenty of goals, as was to be expected given the styles of play of these teams.
Ayoze Pérez virtually clinched the ‘Zarra’ trophy after scoring his 19th LaLiga goal, as Oihan Sancet would have to score four goals on the final matchday to equal it. The ‘Yellow Submarine’ will return to Europe after a brilliant season in which Marcelino has managed to minimise their big problems in defense and regain the fangs in attack to make his team a compact and dangerous unit.
RCD Espanyol will be playing on the last matchday:
Manolo Gonzalez’s side visited El Sadar in need of a win to secure their stay in the First Division. As for CA Osasuna, the ‘Rojillos’ were looking for the three points to reach the European places while awaiting the result of the clash between RC Celta and Rayo Vallecano. The home side were far superior and took the game, leaving the fight for Europe in the balance, as they are tied with Rayo and are only one point behind the Vigo side.
RCD Espanyol have been dealt a tough blow, but they are depending on themselves to stay in the category. They will have to rely on the likes of Joan García and Javi Puado to beat a UD Las Palmas side already relegated. We will see in the next edition of LaLiga’s La Prórroga who will play in Europe next season and who will stay in the category.
