Madrid started off with five midfielders just like they did at the Spanish Supercup, but that system did not work this time and the Lucas Vázquez and Vinicius input was the key to end the positive streak that Cholo had at the Bernabéu, where he had not lost yet in LaLiga.
Atlético were better in the first half since Madrid were unable to find the gap to make passes and hurt Atlético´s defense, which was very comfortable on the field. The Rojibancos also put Madrid in trouble thanks to forward Morata, who was a pain in the neck for Madrid central defenders Ramos and Varane. Morata was supporting his teammates to receive the ball, and Vitolo was very active in the middle to assists Atlético´s forward.
Atlético´s bet was to steal and look for counterattacks right away while Madrid´s approach was to elaborate more, but neither of their attemps were dangerous. Atlético had up to three clear chances in the first half through Vitolo, Saúl and Correa, but Courtois kept a clean sheet. Madrid´s only chance was a high shot from Ramos.
Lucas Vázquez and Vinícius game changers gave Madrid the depth they needed to get over Atlético´s tough defense. The winning goal came from a great movement by the Brazilian winger to open space for Madrid´s left back Mendy to assist Benzema, who finally broke his scoring drought against Atletico at the Bernabéu in LaLiga.
Morata had to ckeck out due to some physical problems and Atlético were totally overcome by a good offensive Madrid that continue their winning run.
