DeMarcus Cousins has signed a non-guaranteed contract with the NBA current champions Milwaukee Bucks. The center was a free agent and the franchise of Giannis Antetokounmpo has bet on him. Will he succeed in this umpteenth opportunity?
The roller coaster of DeMarcus Cousins in the NBA:
DeMarcus Cousins was selected as the 5th pick in the 2010 Draft by the Sacramento Kings. He became a key player right away. He managed to be in the 2015 and 2016 All-Star and averaged 26,9 points, 11,5 rebounds and 3,3 assists per game in the 2015/2016 season, his best stats during his time in the franchise from California.
But DeMarcus Cousins needed to leave the Kings in order to join more ambitious projects. He was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans in February 2017 where he built a lethal duo with Anthony Davis. He was an All-Star again in 2017 and missed the 2018 edition due to an injury on his achilles tendon that kept him out of the court for the rest of the season and did not play again for the Pelicans. On that season he averaged 25.2 points, 12.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists, reaching his prime.
He landed in San Francisco in 2018. This way, the Golden State Warriors added another piece for their super team. They were the current champions and the arrival of DeMarcus Cousins was an excellent sign. The center dragged issues from his past injury and made his debut halfway the season. He was finally able to take part in the Playoffs after nine seasons in the NBA and he even reached the Finals, but they fell to the Toronto Raptors of Marc Gasol.
He was traded to the Lakers the next season and met again with Anthony Davis. DeMarcus Cousins did not manage to debut with the Lakers and he also suffered a ligament tear, an injury that did not allow hm to play for a long time. The Lakers signed Dwight Howard as his substitute and cut him off.
Last season he joined the Houston Rockets right during their rebuild process after the exit of James Harden. He was cut off after playing 25 games and return to Los Angeles, this time to the Clippers, to end the season.
Umpteenth opportunity in the NBA:
We will never know what could have happened if the injuries had respected DeMarcus Cousins, but the reality is that he is not even the shadow of what he showed in Sacramento or New Orleans. Now he joins the Milwaukee Bucks with a non-guaranteed contract and we will have to see if he can add anything to the team of Giannis and company.
