Koulibaly is the new signing of Chelsea, who joins in order to take over the exits of Rüdiger and Christensen on defense. The ‘Blues’ have paid 40 million euros for the Senegalese central defender, who has signed until 2027. His last club, Naples, have already said bye to the player after eight seasons in the team.

Another recent signing has been Raheem Sterling, from Manchester City, in exchange for 56 million euros approximately. He comes in order to strengthen the offensive area of the ‘Blues’ after the departure of Lukaku, who returns to Inter on loan. Sterling scored 17 goals and gave eight assists last season.

As always, Chelsea solve their problems by signing new players. Despite the exit of Russian money, the team from London wants to keep being important both in England and Europe. The term “state clubs” like the cases of Manchester City or PSG is now trending, but we must also include among this type the club that was actually the pattern to follow at the start of the century. Russian money preceded the emirs’ teams until reaching the current situation, with Roman Abramovich leaving the club.

Chelsea have been unable to set up a clear dominance in the English football, even though they have lifted such important titles such as the Champions League in the 2020/2021 campaign. This achievement was preceded by a transfer market where they signed players like HavertzWernerZiyechChilwell or Mendy. The addition of coach Thomas Tuchel half season through was the key to success.

As the current Champions League winners, the ‘Blues’ were the main candidates for everything at the start of this last season. Lukaku returned to Chelsea in order to be the difference maker, even though his season ended up being disappointing. In fact, they started lifting the European Super Cup and the Club World Cup, which allowed them to extend their success from last season.

In the Premier League they finished on a comfortable third spot but unable to compete for the title with the absolute dominators of the tournament, Manchester City and Liverpool. In the Champions League they faced an inspired Real Madrid. Mendy did not have his best day in the first leg (1-3) and even though they managed to come back in the Bernabéu with three goals, Rodrygo forced the extra time in the 80th minute and Benzema put it away in the 96th. They were also unlucky in the Cups, as they lost both finals to Liverpool.

Now it is time to start over again. They must leave the disappointments behind and keep exciting. The new owners are aware of this and that is why they have strengthened the roster with the additions of Sterling Koulibaly. There are still other pending signings on defense such as Koundé or Aké, and they will also need a striker in order to substitute Lukaku.
