A couple of weeks ago, Southampton were relegated to the English Second Division with seven games to go, becoming the fastest team in Premier League history to be relegated. It was an emotional blow for all the Saints players, especially Aaron Ramsdale, who was relegated for the fourth time in his career at the age of 26.
Prior to this relegation to the Championship, the England goalkeeper had suffered relegation with Chesterfield (from the fourth to the fifth tier in 2018), Bournemouth and Sheffield United (from the Premier League to the Championship in 2020 and 2021 respectively). A fact that contrasts significantly with the player’s performance, given that in all these teams, he has been one of the most outstanding players.

Ramsdale’s case is quite peculiar. Despite being relegated twice in a row with two different Premier League teams to the second division, the goalkeeper had performances of a high level that made the big clubs in Europe take notice of him. In the end, Arsenal FC were the ones who managed to take him for around 28 million euros to face the 2020-2021 season.
After two very good seasons as keeper of the ‘Gunner’ goal, in the 2023-2024 season, he had to fight for the starting line-up against a great David Raya who arrived to the team as a star signing. The Stoke-on-Trent native was unable to win the battle against the Spanish goalkeeper, being relegated to the bench. This caused him to look for a move to newly promoted Southampton the following year.
In this way, Ramsdale went from fighting for a league title with his club to relegation the following year with his new team. From near glory to the depths of hell in just one year.

Aaron Ramsdale, despite the misfortune of the teams he has played for, has always stood out as a goalkeeper of immeasurable quality.
