As the first round of the Premier League draws to a close, there are still five teams with a serious chance of taking top spot in the league at the end of the season. Unlike in the past, at this stage of the campaign, no team has emerged as a lone title contender.
In recent years, we have seen Manchester City‘s dominance in the English league become increasingly latent, creating significant points gaps with their opponents from the start of the season.
Only a couple of teams per season were able to follow in their wake, and in these past leagues they have been Arsenal, Liverpool and, on occasion, Tottenham. However, the might of City always prevailed in the closing stages to win the championship trophy.
A break in the ‘Cityzen’ hegemony:
Today, we find ourselves in a very different situation. With 16 games played, as many as five teams are in the title race. Only seven points separate first from fifth.
In fact, it is currently the league of the five big European leagues in which the points difference between the teams at the top of the table is the smallest. One of the main reasons for this is the poor form of Manchester City.
The ‘Cityzens’, until last Sunday against Luton Town, had gone four games without taking three points. A negative streak that has seen them drop to fourth place with thirty-three points.
Pep Guardiola is lacking defensive solidity and his midfielders and wingers are failing to connect with their attacking titan, Erling Haaland, who is going through a goal drought.
However, it isn’t just the Manchester side’s plight that has caused them to slip down the table. In the 2023-24 Premier League, we are enjoying a number of highly competitive teams that are exceeding expectations.
New title contenders:
Case in point: Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur. Two teams that had serious problems last season to stay in the top positions and this season they are getting the best out of themselves, offering English fans incredible performances that place them third and fifth, respectively.
For both sides, the responsibility for that turnaround has been largely down to their coaches. Unai Emery at Villa Park and Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium have been able to transform their respective teams into lethal weapons based on tactical mastery.
Both the London and Birmingham sides have managed to take points from their games against the big boys, with Aston Villa’s two consecutive wins over Manchester City and Arsenal being significant.
Another issue is that of Arsenal and Liverpool. Two teams that have been showing a high level for a couple of seasons, but who have been suffering from fatigue in the last few games, dropping points to the hegemonic Manchester City. This year, it seems that both teams have improved their deficiencies and are sweeping the domestic competition, maintaining an enviable competitive rhythm.
As of today, Liverpool are top of the Premier League with 37 points, followed by Arsenal, one point behind. It’s a picture that any ‘Gunner’ and ‘Red’ fan would sign for the last few rounds of the competition.
There is still just over half a season to go before the end of the competition. Nevertheless, it looks set to be a very competitive and lively league.
