This past weekend, Manchester United recorded their fourth consecutive league win in a row with a 2-1 away victory over Luton Town, which confirms the team’s good form at this stage of the season. The architect of this latest victory was a player who until recently had been disappointing at Old Trafford, namely Rasmus Højlund.

The Dane scored a double in the first seven minutes of the game that stunned the home fans, and which Luton Town were unable to overcome over the next eighty-three minutes.

Højlund, a signing with a tough adaptation:

The Danish player arrived in Manchester with the tag of a top European player. However, he didn’t have much luck in his start in the Premier League, going unnoticed in matches and not showing what was expected of him.

In fact, the striker went the first fourteen Premier League games without scoring a goal. A situation that relegated him to the bench for several games. However, the young striker is making up for his poor performances in recent matches.

So much so that he has now scored in seven consecutive games. Specifically, six English league games and one FA Cup game. At just 21 years of age, he has become the youngest player to achieve such a positive run in front of goal in the Premier League.

A player and a team reborn:

Since ‘Boxing Day’, Højlund looks like a different player: he shoots at goal once more on average per game, has an average of more than one goal per game, has assisted on more than one occasion and in the personal ‘expected goals’ statistic his has skyrocketed.

Thanks to all this good data, the fans of the ‘Red Devils’ are looking at the league table with different eyes.

They are currently sixth, just three points behind Tottenham Hotspur, who occupy the Europa League place, and five points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa, who, if they overtake them, would have a chance to play in the Champions League.

It seems that Rasmus Højlund and his teammates have left behind the negative run of play that characterised them during the first part of the season. What’s more, right now they are living a very sweet moment.

In the next few games we will see if this glorious moment continues or, on the contrary, it has all been a momentary illusion.
