Gündogan and Íñigo Martínez are already official, Vitor Roque is on the verge, the operation to sign Oriol Romeu is very advanced and the contacts with Fresneda don’t cease. Barça is doing its homework in terms of arrivals, but the departures aren’t progressing and this is causing complications in terms of registrations.
FC Barcelona’s wage bill has to continue to fall in order to be able to sign new players. The botched contracts of Bartomeu and the previous board of directors continue to weigh the institution down.
As if that weren’t enough, clubs interested in Barça players aren’t helping, they know Barça’s situation and are making low offers to take advantage. An example of this is the departure of Lenglet, agreed months ago for 12-14 million euros with Tottenham, but it has stalled because the English club have lowered their offer to five million.
The consolidation of the azulgrana project requires a good transfer market, but it is difficult when you can’t offer guarantees of registration to the players, as happened with Leo Messi and Brozovic, among others. If the azulgrana board wants to have a sweet-smelling market, sales must be accelerated.
Difficult operations for Barça:
In addition to mis-selling discards, as it is very difficult to close favourable deals with players who have exorbitant contracts, as happened with Umtiti, FC Barcelona should make some important sales.
To get the maximum economic return, the best thing would be to close a sale that doesn’t involve losses in amortisations, such as Ansu Fati or Abde, the former a home-grown player and the latter arrived for two million euros, or Frenkie de Jong, who has a very high salary and for whom 100 million euros could be obtained.
There is no way of knowing how the club will be able to close this transfer window satisfactorily, but the omens suggest that some unwanted operation will have to be closed.
It is very hard for a historic club with the greatness of FC Barcelona to find itself in a situation like this, but the shadow of the legacy of ‘barto-rosellism’ is very long.
