This Friday 11 August at 19:30, LaLiga EA Sports 2023/2024 will kick off with Almería and Rayo Vallecano as protagonists. But, two days before the start of the season, the situation of the clubs and their new reinforcements is really worrying, yet another summer. The final countdown has begun and of the almost one hundred reinforcements in our league, barely half have been registered.
Teams such as Barça and Alavés haven’t yet registered any of their signings and, in the case of the Culés, the situation is extreme because they only have 13 registered, among which, two such as Dembélé and Kessié, are more out than in. Everything seems to indicate that many of the new players will have to watch their teams from the stands because of the current transfer policy, something very worrying and embarrassing.
So far, less than half of the clubs have been able to register all their transfers in the competition. The rest haven’t yet done so. Most of them have problems to do so and it is difficult to believe that they will do so before Friday. This is the harsh reality of Javier Tebas’s LaLiga just before the ball starts rolling. Teams stifled financially, full of free agents and loans, light years away from the Premier League in almost every aspect.
Last year the situation was similar, with only 60% of signings registered at the start of the campaign. This year, however, nothing seems to have improved, despite the fact that, at the beginning of the summer, the employers’ association raised the percentages for clubs that exceeded the thresholds. If at the beginning 40% of the salary savings could be used for new signings, it became 50%.
The solution to this whole situation doesn’t lie in relaxing certain measures at the end of the market or at the start of the competition to make clubs happy, but in relaxing these measures or looking for other more appropriate ones at the start of the market to avoid reaching this point and giving such a pitiful image to the rest of the world in the middle of August, just a few days before the first league games.
Our league deserves clubs capable of retaining their stars, getting good money for their players and not having to sell them badly. And above all, we deserve a league in which players sign a contract with the certainty of being registered and being able to participate in the league from the very beginning.
Another summer with the same old song, another August with the uncertainty of knowing, until the last minute, who can play on the first matchday and who can’t. Who really benefits from Javier Tebas’ competition?
We still have a lot to improve and learn, a lot to advance. However, it is clear that this is not the way.
