Since his return from his well known gambling ban, we have rarely seen Sandro Tonali in a Newcastle shirt on the pitch. A situation that looks set to result in the Italian’s departure from the club.

Sandro Tonali was one of Newcastle’s star signings in the summer of 2023. In fact, he was one of the big bets of the owners of the club in order to build a team that was firmly established in the elite of European football. A project for the future hinged on him, which, to date, seems to have been completely truncated.

The board of the northern English club made a huge financial effort to acquire the midfielder who, at the time, was one of the key players for European giants AC Milan. In total, it was around 70 million euros for a player who was expected to produce great results and exceed the high expectations that both the club and the fans had placed in him.

A sanction that changed everything:

A few months after his arrival in the Premier League, Sandro Tonali would receive a blow that would leave him completely knocked out. In October 2023, he received a harsh sanction that forced him to spend 10 months on the sidelines. This sanction was part of the sentence imposed on the Italian for a case of illegal betting in which he was involved and which took place during his time in Italian football.

He served the sanction strictly. In addition, the FA accused him of having placed between 30 and 40 bets on football matches after his arrival in English football. These accusations were fully accepted by the player, who apologised and acknowledged his mistakes.

A frustrated return:

On 28 August this year, Sandro Tonali ended his suspension in the second round of the EFL Cup. In a match against Nottingham Forest, the young midfielder played 62 minutes. However, since that game, he has only made 15 appearances for the ‘Magpies’. Quite discreet figures for a player who had been signed to be a key part of the squad.

These figures clash with his role in the Italian national team. With the ‘Azurra’, he has the full confidence of coach Spaletti, putting him in the starting line-up in almost all of the national team’s matches.

Although he has the confidence of the coach, the lack of minutes with his club is making Sandro Tonali desperate. That is why, from Italy, several clubs are tempting the player with his return, especially Milan, where he lived his best years. Therefore, the ‘rossoneri’ fans would see with good eyes his return.

Apart from the rumours linking the Italian international with Milan, there are other top teams interested in him, such as Inter Milan, Juventus, PSG and Bayern Munich.

The future of Sandro Tonali is up in the air, what is clear is that he looks far away from Newcastle and the Premier League.
