2020-2021 season in Italy is being a different one from the previous years. The City of Milan has now again two teams on top of the table, as they used to do in the past. Furthermore Napoli, Roma, Atalanta, Lazio and Sassuolo are adding competitiveness to a league that has been clearly dominated by Juventus for several years.
This competitiveness is being reflected on the scores table, which is now led by Cristiano Ronaldo with 15 goals. No doubt that the Portugueses is the Juventus´leader as well. He is one of the few certainties in a team full of unknowns, as Pirlo has not been able to add consistency and regularity to the ‘Vecchia Signora’. However, the Portuguese keeps scoring goals and he is the favorite player to earn the ‘capocannoniere‘ award.
Zlatan Ibrahimović, Ciro Immobile and Romelu Lukaku are below him with 12 goals each. Ibrahimović has the best ratio of goals per game (1.5) among this strikers. Moreover, and just as Cristiano, he is the leader of his squadra: despite his age (39 years old), he keeps an excellent fitness and technical level. He has always proved several times that he is the reference voice at Milan´s locker-room. Certainly, his experience is worth it for a roster full of young players.
Competition will be tough for the Swedish on the race for the ‘capocannoniere’. Immobile, Serie A´s current scoring leader (he scored 36 goals in the 2019-20 season) keeps showing a fantastic level at Lazio. He is the best element of the Roman club offensively along eith Luis Alberto. This way, Inzaghi ´s team is close to the European spots mostly thanks to this duo.
On the other hand, Lukaku is also on an excellent shape. In fact, Inter Milan are the Italian squad that have scored the most goals -45-. Jus like Immobile, Lukaku can count with a luxury partner for his task: Lautaro Martínez. They are both key parts of Conte´s system and the team performs well if they do as well (and vice versa).
Candidates for the ‘capocannoniere’ award, just as their teams, generate a tremendous competition on their rivals. This has turned into an exciting and more even league than expected. Maybe this could be the year of the hegemony´s end by the ‘bianconera’.
