The Inter Milan of Simone Inzaghi is the favorite to win Serie A this season, as they rank first with a one-point lead with one less match than their rival, Juventus.

A good Inter side means good news for global football, the same way it will whenever Barcelona and Manchester United get back on track and prove the greatness they once had.

Improving on what they accomplished last season seemed complicated as, in spite of the performance being worse tha expected in the domestic competition, everything would have changed had they been a little more accurate in the decisive match. The 14 goals and seven assists of Lukaku in 2022-2023 did not have an impact, as he missed the most important chances he had.

The ‘Nerazurri’ had wasted the chance to win their fourth Champions League, what could have tied them up with Ajax as the sixth team that has lifted the top European trophy the most times.

Inzaghi had to rebuild the squad after the departure of some of its key players last season in Onana, Skriniar, Brozovic, Dzeko or Gosens. And he knocked it out of the park.

A transfer window in which they added assets like Sommer in goal; Pavard on defense, along with Acerbi who arrived on a permanent deal after the loan of last season; Frattesi, who has been really important by the side of Asllani and Carlos Augusto in midfield; while up front, Marcus Thuram joined them as a free agent and is a candidate to be labeled as the best signing of the summer in Europe due to the transfer being free.

All these signings left a positive balance of close to 60 million for Inter, but the team would not be hurt by that.

It is the case of a solid team, as not only do they concede the least goals in Serie A (only 10 in 21 matches compared to the 13 that Juventus have received), but they also score the most out of any team in the competition by far (they have scored seven more goals than Milan in one less match).

But it is impossible for a team with such productive offensive pieces (as the ones Inzaghi has) to not work. The trio of Calhanoglu (the main midfielder of the team who has scored the 10 penalties he has taken with the Italian side) – Lautaro (the top scorer in all of Serie A) – Thuram (a prodigy at attacking space) has turned the club into one of the only three teams in Europe in which three of their players have scored 10 or more goals this season.

Lautaro has proven to be, not only the main offensive weapon of the team managed by Inzaghi, but also mature enough to become the best player in Serie A with 19 goals and four assists in 19 appearances. Surreal numbers for any player that the Argentinian has turned into a routine in the last lustrum (he has not recorded less than 19 Serie A goal contributions in the last five seasons and has improved his production annually).

The LU-LA (Lukaku-Lautaro) duo seemed like it could not be topped, but the Argentinian has found in Thuram another perfect partner in the offensive line. The Frenchman, who was rumored to join Atlético de Madrid, is a breath of fresh air for the team and the Argentinian striker as a result of the speed and power that lead to the creation of more spaces for Inter’s number ‘10’.

A good defense and an even better attack. Not even a half-hearted group stage as they focused on the domestic competition is preventing Inter Milan from fighting for everything in Europe.

Beware, Atlético de Madrid, because the Italians are an even better team than last season.
