The 33rd LaLiga EA Sports matchday has left us with results that have a big impact on the three big fights: the title race, the European competition places and the relegation battle. At the top, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona continue to fight for the title, while at the bottom, UD Las Palmas slip into the relegation places and Girona FC and Sevilla FC move closer to relegation. LaLiga Overtime 24/25 – Match Day #33:
FC Barcelona are still unbeatable:
Hansi Flick’s side are back to their best after two games in which they dropped their level, but kept up their results. FC Barcelona fired in more than 40 shots in a match in which Leo Román was on display and served as a showcase for a more than likely exit from RCD Mallorca next summer.
Despite the overwhelming dominance, the Culés only managed to score one goal and the visitors came close to snatching a point in a game in which they were totally subdued. Pedri González was once again outstanding and set the pace of the game from start to finish. However, the game left a controversial goal disallowed to Mateu Morey on the stroke of half-time when the visiting fans claimed that the play was not stopped at the correct time when the lines were drawn.
RC Celta cling on to Europe:
RC Celta have confirmed themselves as one of the most attractive projects in LaLiga and this matchday was an absolute confirmation. Giráldez’s team received Marcelino’s Villarreal CF at Balaídos and beat them 3-0 with goals from three of their own players: the promising Fer López, the proven Borja Iglesias and the legend Iago Aspas. Despite the heavy scoreline, it is worth noting that the visitors were undone by a controversial red card for Eric Bailly with the score at 0-0.
The ‘Yellow Submarine’ collapsed at Balaídos, in a defeat that could jeopardise their participation in the next Champions League if Athletic Club do not win the Europa League, something that would be a failure considering that Marcelino’s side are not playing in European competition and this year there are five Spanish places in Europe’s top competition. ‘The Celestes’ are in seventh place after a magnificent season, but the defeat against RCD Espanyol in Balaídos and in Barcelona after going 1-3 up in the second half, means that RC Celta have given up on the dream of the Champions League.
Real Madrid held on at El Coliseum:
Carlo Ancelotti’s side came from behind to win by the narrowest of margins in a game that served to vindicate Arda Güler, but which also resulted in an injury to Eduardo Camavinga, who was tipped to start the Copa del Rey final this Saturday. Real Madrid had a decent first half generating many chances with Endrick having several clear-cut opportunities.
In the second half, Getafe CF took a step forward thanks to Bordalás’ adjustments and it took the figure of Courtois to keep Real Madrid alive in the fight for the title. The second act of Ancelotti’s team was very weak and leaves a bad taste in the mouth for the whites ahead of this weekend’s ‘El Clásico’. We will see in the next editions of LaLiga Overtime who takes the title.
