UEFA has announced that the Champions League will resume in final eight format between August 12th and August 23rd, which is the scheduled date for the final. Atlético de Madrid, Atalanta, Leipzig and PSG have already qualified for the quarter-finals, which will be held at Lisbon´s two most important stadiums, Da Luz and José Alvalade.
The four remaining round of 16 second legs will most likely take place at the home team´s stadium, but UEFA will not confirm that until mid July depending on how the pandemic situation is controlled in the countries where those matches were supposed to be played. Pending rounds are Manchester City – Real Madrid (2-1), Barcelona – Naples (1-1), Juventus – Lyon (0-1) and Bayern Munich – Chelsea (3-0). Matches are expected to be held under closed doors, but UEFA has not ruled out the possibility to let some fans in. Teams will be allowed to make up to five substitutions per game as well.
Europa League will also adopt this new final eight format with games being disputed in Germany also in August. Every round will be played to a single-match knockout format, including the rounds of 16 that did not even complete their first leg, like the case of Sevilla – Roma and Inter – Getafe. The European Supercup final between the winners from the two competitions will take place in Budapest on the 24th of September.
