The Copa América Final ended with Messi´s curse with Argentina, as we already posted this week. However, Neymar Júnior was on the other side and missed a golden chance to lift his first trophy with Brazil. His international victories until now are the Confederations Cup in 2013 and an Olympic gold medal in 2016.
At the age of 29, he still has two World Cups to play and one Copa América (he would be 36 at the 2028 edition). This way, they look to be enough opportunities to reach the glory with his country, as he would write his name on Brazil´s history. The truth is that, from my point of view, Neymar Júnior is currently the best player in the world.
His career has been overshadowed by two titans, Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. In fact, I believe that his move to PSG helped him to develop all his football. Getting out of Messi´s shadow at FC Barcelona is not a small detail, as this decision made him to become the main player of his team and grow as a ‘playmaker’. Now he is a total player both at his national team and in Paris.
Both players have started their progressive drop in their performance and Neymar is reaching his peak at the same time. This is why I think that his best moments are still to come.
I also believe that there are plenty of reasons to think that the Brazilian will go down in history (whatever happens) but, just like Messi, the absence of an important title with Brazil can downgrade his legend.
Neymar´s game is capable of transmitting the love for the game to the kids, the fantasy that today is missing in the world, the nostalgia of the time when the dribbling was the king. All in all, the magic of the ball. He has defects as any other human being, but that should not prevent us from enjoying of a unique, different and genuine player. The real inheritor for Messi and Cristiano and king of his own legacy.
