After losing the title against Bayern on the final match day of last season and the departure of Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund have completed a subpar first round of the Bundesliga. They currently rank fifth, one of their worse situations in the last few years in a competitive level and when it comes to their roster as well.

The risk of signing young and promising players and becoming a ‘middle man’ team in the market can have consequences like the ones Borussia Dortmund are suffering from this season. The impact of the players that have left mixed with the ones that have not performed as expected, like Süle, Schlotterbeck, Malen or Moukoko, has resulted in a substancial weakening of their roster.

This season’s project lacks stars or players to bring back the excitement to a fan base that can only celebrate being first in the group of death of the Champions League. However, the results have been a lot better than the sensations.

In this winter transfer window, they have signed Ian Maatsen and Jadon Sancho has returned on loan without a purchase option. The arrival of the English winger will most likely bring excitement to their fanbase as he is a player who can make a difference, but in the scenario that he performs well, it will not be easy to bring him back from Old Trafford at a reasonable price.

Borussia Dortmund need reinforcements in multiple positions, mostly on defense and midfield which, after Bellingham’s departure, has lost a step and lacks a solid playmaker and a defensive midfielder that improves the inconsistent performance of Emre Can.

Up front, they have interesting options like Bynoe-Guittens or Moukoko, although the latter is starting to be questioned due to his lack of discipline and consistency. There are also players like Julian Brandt or Marco Reus, veterans who truly lead the team.

Terzić’s pupils are still struggling on defense, especilally when it comes to the right-back position as all they have is Meunier in a poor state of form; Marius Wolf, a repurposed winger and Mateu Morey, who is showing potential but has already suffered too many injuries.

The team who call Signal Iduna Park home need a rebuild to bring the excitement back to a fanbase that has not seen their team lift an important trophy in over ten years.
