With practically everything decided, the end of the championship has been somewhat bland. Very little at stake. The title already has an owner. So do the Champions League positions. Cádiz faced the last ticket available to not be left stranded in the LaLiga Hypermotion station. A derby, against Sevilla, with multiple fans of the club in the bleachers of the Sánchez-Pizjuán. The match began with a massive mistake by Chris Ramos that could result in them being relegated. With an open goal, the forward could not shoot on target.
Time was running out and a controversial decision by the VAR overturned the first goal of the Andalusian squad. But, in the last moment, Juanmi found Sergi Guardiola with a through ball to make him the hero of the day. A goal that brought Cádiz back into the fight to avoid relegation and a match worthy of being featured in this week’s edition of LaLiga Overtime.
A Madroa, as always, to the rescue:
A goal by Cádiz that felt like a bucket of cold water to those that were in Balaídos. Claudio Giráldez confessed that they knew the result beforehand and that it had caused some nervousness. From being able to face the match calmly to needing the three points.
The starting eleven caused some controversy. Without Iago Aspas, Mingueza or Hugo Álvarez, Celta had an extremely poor first half. To make things worse for the team based in Vigo, Álex Berenguer scored the goal of the season. A direct goal from a corner kick that silenced the Galician city, who saw themselves just two points clear of the relegation zone.
In the second half, reinforcements came in. Iago Aspas, Mingueza and Hugo Álvarez were like a breath of fresh air for the sky-blue side. Hugo Álvarez was the star of the show. After performing a tunnel, he dished out an assist to Williot Swedberg, another hero for their fanbase, who tied the match up. Afterwards, a shot that not only held his power, but all of the strength of Balaídos, completed the comeback and granted Celta a huge step towards salvation.
Another protagonist made in A Madroa that celebrated enthusiastically while his master, Iago Aspas, proudly watched as another one of his pupils put on the hero’s cape.
The revelation that could turn into a disaster:
Las Palmas were living the drea. Qualifying fo a European competition seemed like a realistic objective, although García Pimienta chose to be careful. “No, it is not an objective for a humble club”, said the Catalan manager after beating Rayo Vallecano back in January. That win marked the beginning of the downfall for the Canary side. They went from dreaming with Europe to starting to feel the incoming pressure of potentially being relegated.
They have only managed two points out of the last 33 and are now five points away from the abyss. The match against Betis was critical, but they could only score a point, although it could be enough to guarantee their presence in the First Division for another year. There are six points between the Canary and the team based in Cádiz, both of whom will face off in a life or death duel. In the case they are defeated, the last match day will deal a heart-stopping end to a revelation that could become a disaster.
