The second round of LaLiga begins with a somewhat unusual matchday. This week, only seven matches were played due to the Spanish Super Cup being held in Saudi Arabia (something incomprehensible in my opinion). Even so, the Spanish competition always leaves highlights every day and in this new edition of ‘LaLiga Overtime’ three names stand out: Lucas Ocampos, Álex Berenguer and Diego López.

Sevilla is a drama and sinking deeper every week. Not even the arrival of Quique Sánchez Flores to the Sevilla bench has managed to revive a team that is just one point away from the relegation places. This week they were playing for their lives against direct rivals Alavés and the team disappointed once again. A new defeat at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán that has further stifled the Sevilla’s fans.
The home side were able to recover from a 0-2 deficit amidst boos from the stands with goals from Rafa Mir, one of the focal points of the home fans’ anger, and Lucas Ocampos, who left one of the images of the season. A no-look penalty that tied the game, but inexplicable given his team’s situation. In the end, it was worthless for a team that seems full of players who don’t understand what they are playing for.
The king of the Basque Country is Berenguer:
On many occasions, there are players who don’t play consistently and seem expendable for the team. In that case, there are two options: give up and let yourself go until you find another team or get your act together and seize the opportunity when it presents itself. The latter is what Álex Berenguer has done. The winger has been relegated to the bench due to the emergence of Nico Williams and the return of Iñaki to the wing.
But a window has opened thanks to the Africa Cup. The eldest of the brothers has been called up by Ghana and left a gap in the starting eleven that Berenguer has claimed. And what better way than in a Basque derby. The most special match for Athletic Club, who managed to beat their biggest rivals 2-1 to present their serious candidacy for the Champions League.
And the best of the match was the player who a few months ago was destined to watch the game from the bench, but who became the king of the Basque Country with a brace in this derby. Therefore, he deserved to be the protagonist of this week’s ‘LaLiga Overtime’.
The show of Diego López:
Valencia arrived in Cádiz on a good run. Two consecutive victories brought Rubén Baraja’s boys closer to European places. A team full of youngsters from Paterna that is showing the fury of a Spanish football big club that has been diminished by the lamentable management of Peter Lim. One of those lads is Diego López, who put on a show at the Nuevo Mirandilla.
A match full of overflow from the electric Spain Under-21 international winger was decisive for his team. A goal and two assists gave him the MVP of the match and allowed Valencia to achieve their third win in a row. A victory that changes the focus of the ‘ché’ team who, with their boys, can afford to look towards Europe.
