“This has been the toughest decision I have had to make during my tenure at Leeds United”. If this has been a difficult call for Andrea Radrizzani, the owner of the club, imagine how the fans are feeling. Marcelo Bielsa is already history for the ‘Whites’.
The Argentinian coach arrived in June 2018 and has been in charged of Leeds for about three years and a half. He reached the Championship Playoffs semifinals in his first season. Then, he lifted the title the year after and led his historical team back to the Premier League.
“[Bielsa] changed the culture of the club and brought a winning mentality to us all”, said Radrizzani in the farewell statement. The ‘crazy’ provided the team with his identity and helped Leeds to practice an attractive and effective football style in the second division.
However, the roster never strengthened itself the right way to stay in the Premier League (with guaranties). The pandemic influenced a lot in the 2020-2021 campaign and Bielsa took advantage of it: he led Leeds all up to the 9th position in the table.
However, in the current season, his team is involved in the race to avoid relegation. This is the reason why the ownership has looked for a change with the hiring of Jesse Marsch.
Marcelo Bielsa has created a special bond with the city of Leeds, where it is strange to find someone who does not cheer up for the club. He has set the bases to become the team into a usual participant in the Premier League and his memory will stay alive for many years.
This is not a strange end in Bielsa’s career, but we can certainly say that this has been a successful time at Leeds. Is this his last adventure? Only the Argentinian knows.
