The Spanish women’s national football team will take part in the Olympics for the first time ever this summer. Spain are the clear favorites at the event after winning the 2023 World Cup and the UEFA Nations League, the competition that gave them the ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics. Montse Tomé’s list of 18 players is filled with talent, as she will have the best players fully at her disposal.

The Olympics are the sporting event that any athlete would like to take part in at some point in their lives. This year, they will be very special when it comes to football, as Spain’s women’s national team will compete for a medal. The Spanish team is at its best and could keep on extending their legacy in this tournament.

Spain will make its Olympics debut against Japan next Thursday, July 25th at the Beaujoire Stadium in Nantes. It will be a difficult debut, as the Japanese side thrashed the Spaniards (0-4) in their last match at the World Cup. However, it must be said that said defeat marked a turning point for Spain, who later managed to win the tournament.

The group stage will continue with the second match against Nigeria on Sunday, July 28th at the same stadium in Nantes. Montse Tomé’s squad will close the qualifying phase on Wednesday, July 31st against Brazil at the Stade Bordeaux-Atlantique.

The Spanish team will face three top-tier opponents in order to advance to the quarterfinals. If they manage to clinch first place, Spain will face the team who finish third in group B or C, which could be Colombia, Germany or Australia.

Montse Tomé was given a tough task in choosing the 18 players who would represent Spain in the Olympics. The coach of the national team usually calls-up 26 players and she has had to discard four of them as well as leaving another four players as reserves. There have not been many surprises aside from the return of Patri Guijarro after many months of negotiations with the RFEF.

The complete list is the following: Goalkeepers, Cata Coll and Misa Rodríguez; Defenders, Ona Batlle, Irene Paredes, Laia Aleixandri, Olga Carmona, Oihane Hernández and Laia Codina; Midfielders, Patri Guijarro, Tere Abelleira, Aitana Bonmatí, Alexia Putellas and Jenni Hermoso; Forwards, Athenea del Castillo, Lucía García, Salma Paralluelo, Mariona Caldentey and Eva Navarro.

Alba Redondo, Elene Lete, María Méndez and Vicky López will join the squad as reserves. These players would only be part of the active roster in the case one of their teammates happened to suffer an injury. Out of the 26 players that originally made up the list, Leila Ouahabi, Jana Fernández, Inma Gabarro and Maite Oroz have been left out.

Before this historical event, Spain will have to play two qualification matches for the 2025 EURO, a competition they already mathematically secured their ticket to against Denmark. The matches will take place this Friday, July 12th against the Czech Republic at Chomutov and Tuesday, July 16th against Belgium at Riazor (A Coruña).

On Sunday, July 21st, they will make their way to France in search of the dream of winning a medal in their Olympics debut. Spain has already shown that they are one of the best teams in the world and that they can beat any opponent. The Spanish national team will have a great opportunity to win the gold medal in Paris.
