The Galician side sealed their promotion in the second to last match day of Primera RFEF with a 3-1 win over Cacereño at Riazor. The ‘blanquiazul’ squad have completed an impecable year to return the historic club to the top.
The last years of Deportivo de La Coruña had not been good for any of the club’s sections. But now, their fanbase can finally regain their happiness as their teams are back on track to rerun to the top. Women’s Dépor got relegated three years ago, during the year of the pandemic. Since then, they have not stopped trying until they have got their desired price: returning to the First Division.
The season of the ‘blanquiazul’ side had been insane as, when it comes to their performance on the pitch, they had outplayed everyone except for Barça B. However, the final stint has been quite challenging, as they have lost three matches in a row, including an absolute beat down against the Catalan academy.
Last Sunday, Riazor opened up its doors for a historic day. The team responded with a win over Cacereño in the second to last match day which, in addition to the defeat of RCD Espanyol against Barça B, led them to achieve promotion mathematically. 14.057 Deportivo fans filled the bleachers of the stadium to celebrate a historic feat. A well deserved achievement for a fanbase devoted to its team. They have never left their side.
They have spent three years fighting for their objective. They fell a match short being promoted in the playoff after falling to Granada CF in the final, and this year, they were one of the favorites to make it into Liga F.
RCF Espanyol were chasing them very closely, but the Catalans will have to battle it out in the playoff. Osasuna, Alhama and AEM Lleida will also be in the mix for this two-legged matchups that will decide who is the second team to get promoted. Meanwhile, Madrid CFF ‘B’, Athletic Club ‘B’ and CE Europa will be relegated to Segunda RFEF.
The Coruña based squad have collected 55 points so far and are tied with Barça’ B’ at the top of the rankings. The Catalan side have the positive goal average, so they are technically considered to be leading the competition. The championship will be decided in the last match day, in which Dépor will visit Fundación Albacete while Barça face Athletic ‘B’.
The team managed by Irene Ferreras is already part of the club’s history and Spanish football. The group they have formed this season will be remembered by their fanbase after a wonderful year. A very young and practically brand new roster, as only three of the players that got relegated as part of the team in the 20/21 season are still on board: Cristina Martínez, Carlota Sánchez and Eva Dios.
What this team has done is very impressive, and the club has fully supported them as well. One of their main names has been that of Millene Arias, one of the true revelations of this season. The Brazilian striker has scored 15 goals and is only one behind Ari Arias to be the top scorer of the competition. Two of her goals were scored against Cacereño at Riazor.
The victory has been widely celebrated by the whole team and the city has fully supported their players. Hundreds of people took the streets to welcome the players to Coruña’s city hall. In addition, the men’s first team formed a tunnel for them before the trip to Albacete.
There is still a game left to keep on making history, but what is already clear is that Dépor are a First Division team.
