LaLiga’s matchday 22 has been very exciting at both the top and bottom of the table. Real Madrid lost to RCD Espanyol, so both FC Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid took advantage to cut points. In mid-table, Real Betis were held to a draw by Athletic Club on Antony‘s debut and Rayo Vallecano stormed into sixth place and into the European places. However, the highlights of the day were the wins for Valencia CF and the aforementioned Espanyol, which put the bottom half of the table in red hot water with many more teams in the fight for salvation. RCD Espanyol surprise Real Madrid:
The victory for Manolo González‘s side is one of the biggest surprises so far this season. A stellar performance from Joan García and great defensive work from a team that was solid and organised were the keys to the home side’s success.
For Real Madrid, the chances were there for the taking. Ancelotti’s side generated many dangerous situations, mainly on the right wing, an area in which Rodrygo Goes was particularly incisive. Mbappé left the occasional detail, but he was not at the level of recent matches and Vinicius Jr is still not on the pitch. The white team protested several controversial actions such as a possible red card for Carlos Romero (scorer of the goal) in a tackle on Mbappé and a penalty not given for handball in the first half. With this victory, the ‘Pericos’ are out of the relegation zone.
FC Barcelona comply against Deportivo Alavés:
The squad coached by Hansi Flick had some stretches of play where they were thicker than usual and missed some very simple passes. In the second half they improved a lot and the ball flowed a lot quicker. Lewandowski’s goal was enough to take all three points.
One of the highlights of the game was Lamine Yamal’s breakaway in his own half. The spanish winger left up to five Alavés players behind him, reminiscent of a certain Leo Messi in his prime. Deportivo Alavés are in the relegation places after RCD Espanyol’s win over Real Madrid.
Valencia CF cling on for dear life:
The ‘Ché’ side were playing for their lives against a Celta squad who are still struggling away from home and who were missing key players such as Iago Aspas, Marcos Alonso and Óscar Mingueza. Corberán‘s men imposed their game on the galicians and Luis Rioja and Javi Guerra scored the ‘Valencianistas’ goals in the match.
With this win, Valencia CF remain in second to last position but are now four points away from salvation. Next matchday they will host CD Leganés at Mestalla, a very important direct duel for Valencia CF.
