What started like a signing that would not get minutes with Carlo Ancelotti, has turned into one of the players that creates the most excitement among the bleachers of Bernabéu. Brahim Díaz makes the fans stand up from their seats week in and week out. He is a different player, the kind that are becoming extinct.
The player born in Málaga arrived at Real Madrid in the 2018/2019 season, in a transfer from Manchester City, to play under Zinedine Zidane. Two seasons and 21 matches later, it was clear that Brahim Díaz was a solid player, but still needed to get much more experience and minutes under his belt. And Zidane was not willing to give him those minutes.
The Andalusian grew as a player in Milan for three years. In spite of not shinning for his consistency, he developed his game and started standing out while playing for the rossoneri.
Up until this year, in which, taking advantage of the injuries Real Madrid have suffered throughout the season, he has kicked the door down. So much so that many would consider him deserving of a starting spot over Rodrygo. But it is not just that. Many fans would consider disrespectful that Luis de la Fuente did not call him up for the upcoming Euros.
Brahim Díaz’s is the football played on the streets. The one in which jackets, sticks, benches and garage doors act as goals. The one of the endless individual skills performed while being chased by five other kids. The one in which matches last until the sun sets and yoy cannot see anymore. The one with rules like “if you throw it away, you go get it” or if the owner of the ball leaves, the match is over.
His low center of gravity, his drives to break opposing lines and dribble past defenders with the ball stuck to his feet, his powerful change of pace, bravery and strong lower body have impressed Ancelotti and all the fans of Real Madrid.
The competition in a club like Madrid is much more challenging and Brahim will have to keep working. But it is clear that there are few players like him left in worldwide football. His street style of football has enamored the ‘madridistas’.
