With the arrivals of Gündogan and Oriol Romeu, the growth of Frenkie de Jong and the regular starting line-up of Pedri, it seemed that, this season, Gavi would be condemned to spend a lot of time on the bench.

However, thanks to his great performances, although with some help from injuries, the Andalusian midfielder is having a great start to the season and is earning a regular place in Xavi Hernandez’s set-up.

Since he was very young, Pablo Martín Páez Gavira stood out in the youth ranks of FC Barcelona, and that didn’t stop over the years. So much so that he made his debut with the first team on 29 August 2021, against Getafe, at just 17 years of age. From that moment on, he established himself in the starting line-up and performed like a true veteran.

Until this season, his place in the starting eleven was assured, but the summer reinforcements put Barça’s ‘8’ on alert. Despite this, Gavi didn’t give up and even improved his performance and managed to control his Achilles heel a little more: his character.

It is true that he was ‘lucky’ that Pedri was injured shortly after the start of the season, and that Frenkie de Jong has also fallen out of favour, which has allowed him to accumulate more minutes to prove his worth, but all the credit must go to his effort.

Although Gavi’s technique is always being downplayed and compared to that of Pedri, the reality is that, as he is proving every time he steps on the pitch, he is a very valid player for Barcelona.

He still has some way to go, and it is likely that he hasn’t reached yet his peak performance, but it seems that he isn’t just anyone, but a player ready to stamp his name on Blaugrana’s history.
