Matchday 9 of LaLiga has left us with several games to remember. At the top of the table, the most notable was Atlético Madrid’s slip, who are starting to distance themselves from the big teams; at the bottom, Las Palmas lost a game against Celta, who were down to nine men for more than half an hour, and Valladolid lost again. Lewandowski is still ‘on fire’:
After last matchday’s defeat, FC Barcelona thrashed Deportivo Alavés at Mendizorroza in a great match. Raphinha and Lewandowski were the protagonists in a first half in which Flick‘s side closed out the game.
For their part, Luis García Plaza‘s side lost again for the third consecutive matchday, looking rather fragile in defence, which is undoubtedly what they need to improve in order to compete better after the international break.
Lukébakio gives Sevilla FC the derby:
The match of the day was undoubtedly the Seville derby, which, according to García Pimienta, will be Jesús Navas’ last. In an intense, vibrant and very evenly matched game, the Nervión side won 1-0 against the ‘Verdiblancos’ with a single goal from Lukébakio, one of Sevilla‘s most outstanding players at the start of the season.
With this win, Sevilla now equal Betis on points and evidence of their positive progression in recent matches, as García Pimienta’s side have been showing a clear improvement in their play in recent days.
As for Betis, this defeat deprives them of a more than likely assault on the European places this matchday. Pellegrini’s side have been rather inconsistent at the start of the season.
Atlético de Madrid get stuck in San Sebastián:
Simeone‘s team visited the Reale Arena, one of the most complicated stadiums in the category. They started in the best possible way, with a great goal by Julián Álvarez in the first minute of the game after a brilliant back-heel by Griezmann.
Real Sociedad grew as the minutes ticked by and eventually snatched an equaliser through a Sucić strike, which beat an Oblak who again made several fine saves to keep his side in contention. Are Atlético Madrid still a title contender?
This matchday, unfortunately, also saw a refereeing episode to remember. Cordero Vega left Celta with nine players, in a match in which Giráldez‘s team committed seven fouls and were shown nine cards, two of them red and seven yellow. Despite this, Celta were able to resist more than half an hour of play with a numerical inferiority more than notorious.
